The Week Ahead in Earth Science: Feb. 2 - 6

Monday will be a lab day with students creating a topographic map of New Mexico's Capulin Volcano.
• On Tuesday students will make a "Monitoring Volcanoes" organizer to study from and observe some demonstrations of volcanic hazards.
• Beginning Wednesday students will be watching the feature film "Dante's Peak" for the rest of the week in class. Discussions about the science in the film will accompany each showing. Students will be completing a "Dante's Peak Analysis" sheet while watching the movie. The analysis sheet is due at the completion of the film and will be graded.

Earhquake Building Champs

Recently students in Earth Science applied their seismological knowledge and engineering skills as they created special models of building frames they hoped would remain standing during a major earthquake. Here is a photo of the 2008-2008 Earth Science Earthquake Building Challenge winner from our classroom contest. This model was designed and constructed by Isaac B., Shawn H., and Joe L. It's a little worse for wear and tear after being tested for many rounds on the earthquake shake table. It outlasted all of the other buildings from the 4th hour class and no other model this year was able to withstand as many weights. This framework was able to support 12 washers before finally collapsing. Congratulations to the winning team!

The Week Ahead in Earth Science: Jan 26 - 30

Monday we begin a new making period and a new semester. Every student gets to start over with a clean slate with attendance and grades.
• Dante's Peak Info Slips will be distributed Monday for students to take home and return by Friday after they have been signed by their parent or guardian.
• On Monday students will make a Magmas & Lavas Study Guide to prepare for the quiz to be given on Friday.
Tuesday the Volcano Record Sheet & Map will be completed in class & handed in to be graded.
• Also on Tuesday students will begin researching a volcano using the Portable Computer Labs. This activity may extend into Wednesday as well.
Thursday will find students experimenting with a Lava Flow Lab in lab groups.
• The Magmas & Lavas Quiz will be given on Friday. Also an introduction to the Dante's Peak film will made complete with some volcanic hazards demonstrations.

The Week Ahead in Earth Science: Jan 19 - 23

Monday & Tuesday we will be reviewing for the Semester Exams which will take place on Wednesday, Thursday & Friday.

• Please study the Q & A study guides that you made on Friday. You will be writing more Q & A guides on Monday & Tuesday in class. Study these simple guides each day and make a difference on your exam grade!

• Save all of your Volcanology papers & notes for next Semester! Our study of volcanoes continues after exam week.

Welcome
