Polyphemus Moth

Danica S. brought this incredible Polyphemus Moth to school a few days ago. She found it on her wooded property. At the end of the day it was released. The Polyphemus Moth was named after the one-eyed Cyclops, Polyphemus, who traps Odysseus and his men in a cave in Greek mythology. The Polyphemus' eye-spots on its wings and its giant size reminded scientists of the Greek monster.

Honors Students Visit Rogers Observatory

The Honors Earth Science class spent a few hours last night visiting NMC's Rogers Observatory in Traverse City. Unfortunately the clouds did not clear out for us (a few students did get a look at the moon before the fog settled in) but the Q & A time with astronomers Dr. Jerry Dobek & Bob Moler was very thought provoking. Dr. Dobek appears in the photo above.
